Searching for suitable motherboards compatible with the 9950X.
I'm considering the 9950x release and reviewing available opinions. I've mostly settled on one motherboard that fits my needs—covering all requirements without breaking the bank. Among the choices, the ASRock X670E Pro RS stands out as a solid option, while the ASUS TUF Gaming X670E-PLUS WIFI and ASUS ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI are also viable. I'm planning to potentially boost the CPU later, so flexibility is important. The lower VRM ratings (840A vs 980A or 1120A) are a consideration, but I want to confirm if a VRM setup is sufficient for my use case.
Are you focusing on X670 for a specific purpose? Do you require the I/O details? Most B650 models should suffice, and unless you're targeting the very basic end, VRM performance with a 7950x under PBO isn't a major issue. Suggestions here work for 7950x / 9950x across various price ranges. If you're committed to X670, any compatible boards will do—choose based on your I/O requirements.
I mainly use it for storage; I currently have two M.2 drives, but I’m planning to add another one soon so I won’t be limited later. The PCI-E 5.0 16x slot is essential for me, ensuring I won’t miss performance upgrades with future GPUs. I’ll definitely check out the B650 boards, thanks!
Three or four options available; budget models include three ports
You checked out tweakers and noticed limited availability of B650 boards with more than three M.2 slots. That made it hard to consider them. I’m leaning toward the ASRock model since I haven’t had any issues with that brand and it looks like a better fit for my requirements. Thanks!
The price for the ASRock board varies depending on the specific model and configuration. Could you clarify which board you're referring to?
The B650E/B650 design isn't meant for more than three channels, yet the B650E-E meets this by utilizing eight lanes from the graphics card. You can also add an extra slot with a PCI-E expansion card, provided you have a free four-lane PCI-E port that doesn't conflict with the M.2 slots, though the X670E model is more likely to offer what you need.
Most B650 boards feature three M.2 ports, which isn't a major issue. SATA options remain available if you require additional storage beyond the three M.2 slots. B-series boards support overclocking on AMD platforms, making them a better choice compared to the X670 chipset. Check reviews for VRM thermal performance; if they meet expectations, you can tolerate less than ideal VRMs. PCIe 3.0 is nearing saturation, so a switch to PCIe 4.0 may be necessary within about a decade. Overall, the B650 appears to be a solid option for this build. Your desire for more M.2 slots is understandable, but consider upgrading to higher-capacity drives if needed.
