XCOM 2 experiences some performance challenges even at maximum settings, often struggling to maintain 1080p 60 FPS with an i5-6600K and GTX 1070. However, this isn’t enough to deter me from dedicating around 200 hours to the game. Both XCOM: Enemy Within and XCOM 2 come with a free expansion called Long War, which transforms the experience into a slow-paced, deep, extremely tough, and incredibly rewarding strategy title. I must admit, though, the game’s turn-based format contrasts sharply with the real-time aspect of "RTS" titles. It feels more like a SimCity experience than SimCity 2013, though it places greater focus on traffic management. Overall, it offers a massive modding scene on Steam Workshop, making it a vibrant and engaging community project.
I used to struggle with SimCity, huh? My brother messed up by trying to run Xcom 2 on his MacBook Pro last fall. He was getting around 15 frames per second or less—possibly even single digits. I thought it was just the weak AMD graphics card, but maybe more than that. These games are already tough! Lol. I should’ve mentioned I like turn-based strategy games too, like Final Fantasy Tactics or Xcom, where you control units on a grid and take turns. What’s that? Sounds interesting. I haven’t played it yet either.
Borderlands? Dragon Age: Inquisition?
Two worlds collide—mystery and magic entwine in a tale of power and peril.
The Borderlands titles are generally considered challenging, especially on mobile devices. You had a good experience with the Vita version, though it was quite forgiving. The Inquisition console release seems to be a separate offering. It’s not showing up on Steam, which might mean it hasn’t been officially released there yet.
Dragon Age will be available on Origin. A few older titles from the lineup will remain on Steam as well. If you're losing, you might be doing it wrong in Borderlands. I recall it being my go-to RPG-Shooter because it didn’t require you to take it too seriously.
Mount and Blade Warband is an engaging game that offers a rewarding experience. It centers around beginning as a peasant and growing your own forces. There can be some repetitive tasks if you suffer a major defeat and must rebuild everything, though I’m capable of spending several hundred hours on it. +1 from my Prison Architect is a solid indie title, allowing you to attempt escaping the prison you construct. If you like detailed control and automation, it’s quite enjoyable. +1 from me A more advanced title is Factorio, focused entirely on automation, production lines, and conveyor belts – also quite impressive. I haven’t played enough to form a strong opinion, but many Steam reviewers appreciate it. If you haven’t tried Supreme Commander yet, definitely get it. It’s a space-themed real-time strategy game. My go-to during high school, I’ve logged over 1,000 hours on it (not on Steam, I purchased the CD). Just a bit biased, but that’s another suggestion. Not the second one, though – it lacks the same appeal.
