Hi guys. So I was over a friends house and saw MGS 5 and it looked like insane fun played it a bit and decided I wanted to get it for PC. Then i learnt about the insane back story. I know you can read an online summery but I was thinking of playing the games themselves. Playing through release date would take a long time, and I only have a PC currently so what i was thinking of doing is using a ps2/psp emulator playing MGS 3, then Portable and Peace walker moving on to ground zeroes (got it today) and then Phantom Pain (yet to get it as I won't be able to resist playing it). Then once I complete all of that, I plan to get myself a PS3 and get the legacy version (think that's it's name anyway it has most of the games) after taking a break so I don't burn out playing just MGS... I know that MGS 1 will be dated but have already tried it (friend had it) and didn't mind it and the story will get me hooked. I know the basic outline of the story now too. So do you think its worth doing? I know some might say release order is the only way and if that is the majority opinion then to be honest Ill just play GZ and Phantom pain and then get a ps3 down the road. As playing 3 games before the newer ones is doable and will put me off playing 5 most likely for a month with the time I get to play... playing 6 or 7 games before 5 will put it so far away that I most likely will burn out before I get to it... I decided to ask on the PC part because that is were I am playing 5 and emulating the games to begin with.

It's worth trying, but I'll be honest—running MGs3 through an emulator is a hassle. My experience with this topic isn't strong.

I managed to get it started, but realized it can be tricky... others suggested Subsistence instead of Snake Eater because of the updated camera. I located a tutorial to help it work smoothly. As long as I save my progress regularly, even if the game crashes or I switch emulators (like PCSX2), I should retain my work.

Thanks! OP should probably try playing MGS1 through Dolphin (Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes). MGS1 is also available on PC, though I’m not sure how smoothly it’ll work with today’s systems—it might be worth a shot, but I doubt it will run perfectly. I’d suggest giving it a try, but I wouldn’t expect great results without some extra work, which I wasn’t ready to do at the time since it was just for testing.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to consider. I noticed it was simpler to lose direction and end up going back, but staying aware of your surroundings helps. The shooting mechanics in MGS3 aren’t the best, though it gets the job done; it feels a bit forced in some areas. A plus with the organic subs is the camera design for more cinematic moments. Overall, MGS3 Subsistence is more forgiving to play. It also includes "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake," but you probably won’t play those unless you’re very committed. I haven’t beaten MG2: SS yet, maybe after a few more attempts I’ll dive into it. I’m planning to go through everything in over-aug before MGS5.

I think players should try them in the release sequence...my cousin plays them in order so it works well for everyone. You’ll find success with MGS3, MGS PW, MGS GZ, MGSV TPP, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (if you want those), MGS1, MGS2, MGS4. If you’re aiming to launch MGS3 through the emulator, good luck! It’s a solid choice for starting out, though it offers a completely different feel compared to MGS5 and all the other games except GZ.

I truly want to enjoy MGS 5, yet I also plan to experience the full series. After reviewing the emulator, I’m settling for the right approach—considering the performance issues and crashes. I’m purchasing a PS3 with The Legacy Collection. For portability, I think it’s okay to take it or leave it, and maybe watch a playthrough on YouTube.

It seems you're discussing a game or story context where "portable ops" refers to a certain mechanic. In a general sense, it's about a world state that blends elements from previous entries, especially around Ground Zeros and TPP. Peace Walker's main mission is less central to the overall story of MGS5, but it can still connect to key moments if you're interested. If you're curious about those events, just let me know and I'll provide a summary.

Thanks! No legacy edition anymore I found out but I can buy.... Metal Gear Solid... Metal Gear Solid HD Collection which includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Then I can also buy Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. All up its going to cost a bit but the games themselves are cheap and to be honest there is more tittles on the ps3 I wouldn't mind checking out but I am going to be up to my eyeballs in Metal Gear Solid Just to triple confirm the play order is (in order of release)... MGS 1 (the ones before I am told are take it or leave it and MGS 1 does a great job of filling in the gaps). MGS 2 Sons of Liberty MGS 3 Snake eater MGS Portable ops (not playing this) MGS 4 Guns of the Patriots MGS Peace walker MGS Ground zeroes MGS Phantom Pain And I most likely will play Revengeance but I hardly see this mentioned when talking about cannon/lore that is relative. Without revengeance its like still 120 hours of Metal Gear according to Howlongtobeat.com lol going to have to pace myself.
