Regarding the build, try using only Windows if you plan to play, and use a Windows file share as well. Alternatively, set up a separate NAS box. You might want to swap those IronWolf pros for Exos drives—they’re cheaper (12TB Exos is less than 10TB IronWolf Pro) and perform better overall, being designed for datacenter use.

The RAM you discovered is compatible with Registered ECC? To operate Registered ECC memory, you must use an EPYC platform. Ryzen processors only support unbuffered ECC memory.

Ryzen doesn't allow buffered dims and it unofficially supports ECC memory.

You have a registered ECC RAM, so you can recommend an unbuffered option. Consider your Swiss vendor for the 2x 10 TB drives you plan to add. This setup follows the builds created by Linus here and here.

For ECC support on AM4 boards, choose devices that are genuinely ECC certified, such as the ASUS WS X570-ACE.

I think I'll run it all on Windows. It's simpler to configure than using Unraid, and it looks like you don't need a second GPU for pass-through. The same RAID and file-sharing setup works well on Windows too.

For gaming, a mixed PC server setup can use only the second generation EPYC models: EPYC 7F52 offers 16 cores/32 threads at 3.5GHz base / 3.9GHz turbo; EPYC 7F72 provides 24 cores/48 threads at 3.2GHz base / 3.7GHz turbo. Both support DDR4 up to 3200MHz.

This board would push me over my budget, unfortunately. It seems acquiring it would be better, but I'm constrained by my finances. Only the Epyc CPU and motherboard would exceed half of what I can spend. I've discovered some RAM, Crucial CT16G4WFD8266—a buffered ECC stick—that should fit with the board I chose. What are your thoughts?
