He’s trying to connect his home Wi-Fi to the kitchen, but previous extenders didn’t work. Now they’re considering running a cable to a central location and using one network for both. I’m unsure if this is possible for private use, but they’re open to suggestions. They can easily get a new router or modem if needed.

Yes, it is possible. You'll need a separate wireless access point or you can change an existing wireless router to operate in AP mode (if it supports this).

Many extenders can be converted into regular access points using a physical connection. Verify that your existing devices can handle this conversion before investing further.
