I've only worked with ASUS boards before and am very new to overclocking. If I enabled ez mode in BIOS and used ASUS Optimal to hit 4.2ghz, it should be relatively simple to achieve the same result with an ASRock board.

The manual remains the best method for overclocking. Software offers references but often demands excessive CPU resources. See: http://www.reguluspc.com/guide/i5-4690k-...00mhz.html

I'm thinking about boosting the budget but not sure if it's necessary. I believe I'm stuck between the z97-a and the maximus vi formula, as the maximus is $100 more than the z97-a. I don't intend to swap the CPU and motherboard combo for at least 2-3 years, possibly up to four if it holds up.

I also discovered a compilation of mobos performance from another discussion board.
