Searching for a router or switch that meets particular requirements.
I’d appreciate any ideas for a good router or switch that matches your needs. You’re looking for something with 8x Gigabit ports, speed limits per port per IP/MAC, and the ability to treat certain ports as simple switches for IPTV. Right now I can’t connect my TV directly because it requires a separate modem connection, so you might want to configure some ports to act like basic switches. You also mentioned wanting traffic monitoring or QoS settings to prioritize specific ports for download/upload speeds.
I’m trying to find options that offer these features without spending much—probably not the top-tier enterprise models. Any recommendations would be helpful!
Usbgui + switch or dream machine pro are available options. Switching the usbgui with a switch lets you set up exactly what you need via the unifi program. Cons, it lacks native wifi if required. Dream machine is solid but only offers 5 ports and built-in wifi. Dream machine pro provides 8 plus 2sfp+ ports with POE+, includes built-in cloud key and IVR (extra info). No built-in wifi either.
The Synology RT2600AC meets several requirements. It lacks eight ports, but affordable gigabit switches are readily available. The speed control isn’t limited to one device; bandwidth can be reserved per device, allowing you to set limits or allocate specific internet capacity. There’s an IPTV option available, though confirmation with Synology is needed to verify compatibility with your provider. It provides detailed usage reports—showing consumption per device, separate download and upload stats. While it doesn’t offer traditional QoS settings, reserving bandwidth per device works well for your needs.
Advantages: Straightforward setup overall. Additional features like Dual WAN are present. Network coverage appears solid. Supports WPA3 encryption.
Disadvantages: Priced at $200 USD. Only supports Wi-Fi 5; no known Wi-Fi 6 devices.
Note: If your television is connected via a modem, ensure it functions as a gateway (router). Connecting a router directly could lead to double NAT issues.
