It sounds like you're thinking of a 2D space MMO with station-based travel and colony-building elements. The game likely involved trading credits for in-game currency, defending hubs, and engaging in competitive bounties. It was released around 2008, though the exact end date is unclear. Do you remember any specific features or characters?

It was a classic MMO with a grid-based layout and no depth. Signing in and out happened within a secure zone.

Located the game, titled Stellar Frontier. It’s been available for a while, but it seems Stardock has stopped providing support and shared the source code with the community now managing the servers. I’m curious if they preserved the old account system to ease the nostalgia! Starport is the updated version I was hoping for.
