Received a free i7 6700 but the board was dead. A friend with a functional one let me try it out—it works! Now I just need a compatible board (a Dell OptiPlex isn’t right for me).

You found a couple of options in the used market. One seller has an Asus Strix Z270F that supports 6th and 7th generation Intel processors, which fits your i7 7700K.

Affordable Z170 and Z270 boards are fine, but you need quick memory performance. B150 or B250 options are better, and the lower the price, the better.
