I hope I could revisit the better times of Asheron's Call and DDO when they were just starting out.
I completely understand but some overlook these aspects. It’s disappointing too since the main experience (removing the cash shop) is really strong. The game offers responsive and dynamic fights, a solid class structure, a semi open world, engaging raids, building mechanics, impressive crafting, sea and ship battles, exploration, and more. But then it falls apart due to poor Trion implementation.
Everyone overlooks the fact that MMOs have vanished because they lack direction. Your group had real reasons to engage. Back in DDO, you couldn’t survive five minutes in a dungeon without a rogue or a cleric. Your role mattered—people depended on you. DDO built the strongest community ever. I recall constant requests to join dungeons for healing because someone needed a healer. Those who claim MMOs are fine today don’t understand what makes an MMO special. Sorcerers brought charm and unlocked runes for party advancement, delivering powerful magic effects. Wizards offered sharp minds and magical buffs that helped the team progress. Rogues excelled at spotting traps, sensing danger, and picking up subtle clues before others. Fighters had strong stamina and were perfect frontline tanks, always there to take the first hit. You wouldn’t want your cleric getting caught in the crossfire and wasting healing time. Barbarians provided raw power, using strength to smash obstacles and carry heavy loads. Some dungeons demanded you transport items while fighting. They also dealt significant melee damage. The system worked well when classes were designed this way—something I regret missing now.
