Hi, I received the 3080 TUF at launch and it's facing performance issues in some games due to my i7 8700. That’s not surprising. I’ve looked at benchmarks and only recently understood how much the K improves gaming. Now I’m considering a replacement CPU and weighing options like the 11700K, 11600K, and 10700K. I’ve been out of the hardware scene for a while and don’t have much experience with specs, just trying to learn from videos. Would really appreciate some advice. Additional details: *CPU - i7 8700, motherboard - TUF z370-PRO GAMING, dual-channel 16GB RAM at 2400MHz (1200 on DRAM frequency in CPU-Z), PSU - 750W Corsair (model not remembered yet, will get it soon)* *GPU - ASUS TUF 3080 OC*

Verify if your performance issues stem from the CPU. You seem to have dual-channel RAM and a solid speed, but with an affordable motherboard you might be stuck at around 2666MHz. If not, adding a second RAM slot can significantly boost performance. Also, if your motherboard has weak VRMs, it could limit your CPU's clock speed. Tools like HWMonitor can help check if your CPU hits the expected 4.3GHz in games or higher. If not, VRM throttling might be the cause, and upgrading the board would help. The distinction between K and non-K models is that the former allows overclocking, which affects performance differently. Edited June 14, 2021 by Fasauceome

there are variations in clock speed and power usage as well, but I agree on other possible concerns. On a Z platform, memory speed seems limited once you reach higher resolutions. If the OP isn't increasing settings at higher resolutions, it might indicate a CPU limitation. Even with a powerful GPU, higher graphics settings should already be your main focus. For achieving very high frame rates at lower resolutions, the CPU may need improvement, regardless of the title.

what else do you need? a 3080 shouldn't be limited by an i7 8700 non k since i already have a 2070 super on an i7 8700k and everything runs smoothly. if you're thinking about upgrading your CPU, you'll also need a new motherboard because the 8700 uses the LGA1151 socket, while the 10700 and 11700 use the LGA1200 socket.

The 8700 and 8700k behave very similarly in games. They consistently reach about 4.3ghz across all cores. Check your motherboard BIOS settings and adjust power limits if needed. From my experience, a 5ghz processor paired with a 8700k delivers strong performance on a 3080, with only slight differences—around 5-10% in real-world scenarios.

The performance difference is notable, especially considering the specific games and settings OP is using.

i wasn't focused on the 2070 to 3080 timeframe. what stood out most was the GPU memory capacity. I own an EVGA 2070 super FTW3 ultra. i don’t play many games that strain both GPU and CPU, such as call of duty or cyberpunk, but i do play occasionally without any problems. even with a "last generation" GPU paired with an 8th gen processor, i’m fine.

It varies by game and what you're doing within them. An 8700 shouldn't really slow down a 3080 unless you're using something extreme like 1080p medium. Higher resolutions or features like ray tracing will make it less of an issue.

i don't believe that either, which is why i left my comment. but i'm not the one who started this discussion and i have an nvidia gpu like the 20 series, 30 series or any other model. i use geforce experience and have adjusted settings for various games to ensure optimal performance. it might not always work perfectly, but it usually does most of the time. i own a last generation gpu with an 8th generation cpu, and so far i haven't encountered a noticeable bottleneck. however, i'm not the original poster. i think the issue could be related to ram or storage problems, similar to how the kingston hyperx fury's rgb overheating led to throttling due to excessive heat. oh by the way, i'm running everything in its default state—no changes made.
