Many people have asked about these keys, and I’ve tested them myself on some of my devices. None were disabled or removed. I thought at such a low cost it’s worth trying. It seems Microsoft isn’t enforcing them deliberately, since they’re still pushing more adoption of Win10. Another case was when I mistakenly upgraded a Win7 system to Win10 using a USB drive I made. I didn’t mean that, and the upgrade never included Win10 during the free install. After the update, it displayed as active.

It occurred again on my desktop that I was editing for a client, after moving from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Despite being well beyond the free upgrade window (which was about a month ago), the software remained enabled.

Some folks download Windows 7, then switch to Windows 10 using a free upgrade, and end up with a genuine activation.
