They purchased a switch that came sealed from a vendor not affiliated with CISCO. We don’t recall the exact source, and we can’t update firmware due to contract restrictions imposed by CISCO. When reaching out for support, we need the contract details or some identifier to proceed. Looking up the serial number on the switch might help identify the seller, though I’m not sure how detailed that process will be.

Noticing your company doesn’t record purchase details makes tracing the supply chain difficult. Examine the initial shipping container and verify if a tracking code exists. Contact the delivery provider with the address to find out the original departure point.

I understand some Cisco devices with their web interface—connected from the switch's IP address—will display a serial number. When accessing via telnet, a "show version" command also provides this info, though it might be labeled differently (it could look similar to a serial number). There’s a Cisco community post at the link you shared that discusses these lookups. It seems there isn’t a standard way to trace the original salesperson using just the serial number, as that data usually resides in internal vendor records rather than public databases. Serial numbers typically reflect manufacturing dates, not ownership history.
