Hello everyone. I just installed a new PC and am considering expanding my DDR4 memory to 32GB. It often puzzles me about timing details, compatibility, and how to fine-tune for peak performance. I’m eager for some guidance and suggestions. Here’s what I have so far:
Current configuration: Intel Core i5-12600K, MOBO ASUS TUF Gaming Z690-Plus, WiFi D4 LGA 1700, Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 (3200MHz), C16 Desktop Memory Kit – white. Timings are 16-18-18-36. GPU is Nvidia 1070. Looking to upgrade to a RX 6700 XT or RTX 3070 soon.
My confusion comes from the fact that my motherboard supports a wide range of RAM speeds, but I thought my CPU (3200MHz) would be the bottleneck when using DDR4. Does that mean I should stick to 3200MHz or can I upgrade to faster speeds like 3600 or 4000MHz?
My thoughts on RAM options:
1) Keep what I have now.
2) Purchase another 16GB of the same type.
3) Buy new 3200MHz RAM if possible.
4) Consider a different speed entirely.
I’m open to kit recommendations and don’t mind RGB, but I really like the T-Force Xtreem line and read many positive reviews. There’s a good sale on 4000MHz kits, though they’re priced at CL18 with timings 18-24-24-46. Isn’t that slower than my current setup? The reviews seem enthusiastic unless they’re comparing to newer models, which I don’t think is the case. CL14 options are more costly, so I’d prefer a CL18 if it fits.
Speed matters, but I’m not looking for extreme performance—I just want a solid build.
You're running tasks that demand a significant amount of memory, such as gaming or general usage—those won't strain the system and the games won't utilize it heavily. For video editing, high-resolution photo work, or managing large spreadsheets, the need becomes more real. However, if you're working with CPU-limited performance, using only 3200MHz RAM might be necessary. Also keep in mind that timing can affect stability.
Unless you're handling very large volumes of data, this setup won't give you major benefits.
Thanks for your input. I'm in the general and gaming area. Sometimes my PC feels a bit slow, so I thought increasing my RAM would make a difference. But checking the available memory shows it's still on the lower side. Would adding another 16GB help? It doesn't seem likely based on all the feedback so far. Appreciate your consideration!
