Hey there, I bought a low-cost $5 key from eBay after hearing some tips online. I assumed the seller was trustworthy because they had high ratings. After the sale, eBay reached out saying their account was compromised, refunded my order, and deleted their listings. They sent me two keys. The first one worked enough to open the activation prompt, but then it crashed. The second one didn’t function at all. I suspect this might be a Windows 7 key or something similar. The seller also gave instructions to download extra software and run as administrator—something I definitely didn’t do. I’m not worried about the $5 key itself, but now my Windows 10 Pro still shows “not activated” in settings and I can’t change the wallpaper. Since this seller seems suspicious, should I be concerned? I didn’t install any programs or download anything; I just copied two keys from an eBay message. Could I have unintentionally exposed my system? Why did the watermark disappear? I wish I had paid the regular price because now I’m confused and unsure what to do.

The Windows watermark can vanish occasionally. I've been using an un-activated version of Windows 10 for about a year, and it sometimes disappears.

Keys are merely sequences of letters and numbers. The system verifies each key against the database of known keys, doing nothing more. Changing keys won’t cause issues unless you test a large number—then you risk being flagged as suspicious.
