Hello everyone, my nephew needs a new PC right now, so I’m allocating most of my AM4 Ryzen setup to him. I’ll keep the RTX 2070 and case, but get a 3700x CPU. I’m looking for a good under £120 motherboard that works with Zen 3 later on. I’ve read many articles about compatibility, but they seem more like guesses than solid facts. I’d prefer a Mini-ITX if possible, but am okay with an mATX if needed. I have a budget and can’t go overboard. I’m not interested in overclocking the CPU. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
For a mATX around $120, the mortar offers solid performance and can comfortably support an 8-core setup.
For mATX I recommend the B450M Mortar Max if you can stretch your budget slightly for the B550M Mortar. For mITX, the Strix B450-I from ASUS is a good option, typically priced around 130-140 quid.
The recommended choice for the budget is this product page: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/h7WB...mortar-max
The MSI ITX board (B450I) is said to feature outstanding VRM designs: https://i.redd.it/7n48gewun0p21.png. It outperforms the B450 Tomahawk, which many favor and are common on other platforms. This could matter if you plan to extend its lifespan and possibly upgrade it with a multi-core CPU. Whether it receives Zen3 support remains uncertain. MSI appears eager to introduce Zen3 to this model, so it’s likely they will. I own a B450I purchased for £106 a year ago, making it a reasonable investment at around £120 now.
