I’m dealing with a custom Windows rig and find it frustrating to manually check and update drivers and software. Are there any tools or programs that can simplify this process, like a Ninite-style solution that handles updates automatically? Most of these options don’t offer built-in auto-updates.

It's named Windows Update? Be wary of software that promises to update drivers on its own, such as iobit driver boost and similar tools. These kinds of programs are essentially just placebos and could potentially cause issues over time.

Windows handles the motherboard drivers and other updates automatically. You mainly need to focus on your GPU drivers. GeForce Experience provides alerts, so you don’t have to deal with third-party tools to resolve issues.

Windows has started showing me alerts about certain applications (not every one, but a few), which can be really useful. I’m not sure if these appear for NVIDIA drivers specifically.

I also support allowing Windows Update to handle its own tasks, because it’s probable that if a driver is required, it will supply it automatically. I see drivers as essential to the system. If they are functioning correctly, updating them offers no advantage. They also don’t enhance performance unless explicitly designed to do so. For instance, NVIDIA releases notes with each driver update, detailing game improvements. Performance gains come only for those specific games, not broadly. Additionally, they include fixes for previously unresolved problems and issues beyond their control.

Yep, there are only a handful of manufacturers still stuck in the early 2000s, not sending updates to Microsoft servers for distribution. Creative Labs is one such example (though I’m not sure what they actually do). Most of the time, only a few select products remain, while others rely on Windows updates to keep everything running. Nvidia and AMD often push updates frequently, sometimes tied to new game releases, which means you might be running behind if you depend solely on Windows Update. This can affect game performance tweaks they provide, but it’s usually not a major issue if you stay updated. The games will still function, just without the latest improvements. It’s just Nvidia and AMD going the extra distance for their users.
