The i7-3820 supports several motherboards, but you'll typically need a BIOS update or a compatible chipset. The X79 board is not required unless your system has specific features that demand it. Check your motherboard manual for the best options.

The Core i7-3820 is an LGA 2011 processor that needs an X79 motherboard. Although X99 is also LGA 2011, its connection method differs and it won't work.

It's acceptable to use it on a budget OEM X79 board.

What kind of boar are you imagining? Usually I avoid those inexpensive x79 boards being produced these days. The LGA 2011 processors are significantly quicker and still quite affordable, which is why I’m heading here.

The Chinese Huananzhi X79 board isn't available on the local used market. It seems priced very high, possibly due to limited supply.

Do you already have the CPU? Is this for a fresh setup? I tend to avoid those boards since they often cause odd problems and aren't made well. With that processor, it might be better to use an LGA 1155 or 1150 used system—they’d cost similarly and perform just as well.

Still waiting on CPU upgrade. Need something better than my Xeon X5450. Heard about 8C/16T Xeons on X79—can’t recall the exact model. Want to play games and run Adobe apps for editing and rendering? I’m thinking of checking out a 3770K or P67/Z68 board for a good deal.

What's your upgrade budget? I'm happy to stick with those i7 Xeons anytime. They'll handle all those programs smoothly. Also, check out used first-gen Ryzen setups—they're likely more recent and dropping in price now.

I estimate the cost around $250 in dollars. I can't access foreign markets, so I'll look for local options. B450 boards are affordable. If I can locate an R7 1700 or R5 1600 at a reasonable price, that would be ideal. Do I really need at least 16 GB of RAM by today's standards?
