My device has been appearing white after the Windows 10 update. It would be great if I could locate programs and files directly from the Start menu as easily as before, without needing to access the local drive.

Turned it on just to see how it looks—it appears gray to me. What makes sense is why you need the search bar; you can simply click the start menu and begin typing to look up information.

You might want to look up something, use the Filter button at the top right, then select "select location". You can add folders to your search and adjust the file types included in the index. Later, you can search by Apps, Documents or Settings, using the other filters to locate what you need in the top icons.

Choose Cortana's box shade based on whether you select Light or Dark mode in Windows. Adjust the setting by navigating to Start > Settings (gear icon) > Personalization > Colors > then pick either Dark or Light.
