When I start a game like Borderlands 3, Minecraft or CS2, my screen turns black and the fans spin nonstop. After a few seconds of audio, it stops completely except for lights. This happened once after booting up and when I opened Event Viewer. My roommate swapped his GPU with mine, and everything worked fine during a stress test. He then used his own GPU in his PC, which also ran perfectly. When we exchanged our GPUs again, the problem returned. I’ve reset the CMOS, changed the PCIe slot, updated drivers, reinstalled them, and even updated Windows, but nothing fixed it. Recently, I bought a new CPU, motherboard, RAM, and cooler in March. I used my PC all day yesterday, turned it off, restarted it an hour later, and the issue reappeared when I opened CS2. Details: i7 12700K, ROG Strix 2070, 8GB DDR5, 32GB, Wi-Fi 6, 750W PSU, Corsair PSU 650W, Ryzen 5 5800X, ROG Strix 2060, 32GB DDR4, 32GB RAM.

Do you have XMP activated? Are there any additional overclocking settings for the CPU or GPU? Turn those off in the BIOS. Ensure RAM is installed in slots A2 and B2 on the motherboard. Don't forget to shut down the power supply unit. Looking forward to seeing you in the forums!

It looks like there might be a power-related problem. Have you considered utilizing your roommate's GPU in your setup?

I was confused because he kept mentioning his roommate's PC. So, the main thing to note is there might be an issue with the power board, PSU, or the card itself.

I haven't adjusted anything manually. All info in the bios indicates auto mode. The AI tuner shows auto too, but I’m not sure it’s active. The RAM is located in the A2 and B2 positions.

You’re wondering if the problem lies with the software. It seems your own GPU runs fine, but the other person’s setup works perfectly, suggesting a hardware or compatibility concern rather than a software glitch. Could be power supply differences, a faulty cable, PCIe mismatch, or a hardware incompatibility?

I had a system restore point before the problem began. It was a thx razer installation. I restored a few weeks prior, but it didn’t solve the issue. I reset the BIOS to defaults, yet it didn’t help. I downloaded Msi afterburner and clocked by GPU to 80%, but that also failed. I’m really confused because I don’t know what to do next. I considered a full Windows reset since I don’t need much on my PC anymore. My roommates temporarily put their GPUs back in, and it worked perfectly while I played several games.

software shouldn't trigger this. If it only occurs when launching games for benchmarks, the PSU might be the issue. Your GPU likely has a higher TDP (around 40-60W) compared to others, which could explain better performance. Besides that, I'd suggest a board problem where the GPU isn't being used in certain situations.

It looks like the GPU is trying to use more power than available, which could indicate a failing PSU. Verify all connections are secure.

I fixed it! The new power supply should have provided adequate power. It was eight years old when I assembled it in 2016. Thank you for your support and advice—it really helped.
