Screen shutting down, connected devices powering down, yellow DRAM indicator illuminated on the motherboard
Hello everyone, I recently assembled a new setup with these specifications:
7800X3D
MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK
32 GB DDR5 6000MHZ
RTX 4070ti Super
Corsair RM750x
The system operates smoothly for extended periods, sometimes even weeks, though occasionally (almost randomly) my screens go dark, the peripherals' lights shut off, and the motherboard's yellow DRAM indicator stays lit. The RGB lighting inside remains active while fans continue to spin. The only solution to restore functionality is pressing the power button and rebooting.
This issue appears more frequently during certain games, especially Chivalry 2 and Metro Exodus.
I have replaced the RAM, updated the BIOS, and performed a memtest with no errors detected.
I also ran Cinebench and 3DMark, which both function correctly and show excellent performance. The BIOS now includes EXPO and Game Boost, along with a -0.1v CPU overclock. Anyone experienced with this problem or with similar concerns?
PSU: details about the build, model, power rating, age, and condition (original, new, refurbished, used)?
Usage history: heavy gaming, video editing, or bit mining...?
Storage devices: specifications of the hard drives, current capacity, and fill level.
Check Reliability History/Monitor for any error codes, alerts, or relevant events recorded near the time the screens went dark and/or the yellow DRAM indicator appeared.
PSU: Corsair RM750X, brand new for the project
Usage: Gaming and general browsing
Boot drive: Teamgroup MP33 512GB, one-third full
Gaming drives: WD 1 TB SN570 x 2, midway full
At this time, the only issues detected are an "ASUS com service shutting down" warning and a "Windows has shut down unexpectedly" message.
With an Asus GPU in question, this suggests a potential GPU issue. However, it might also stem from a failing PSU that isn't providing sufficient power for the 4070 Ti, which requires at least 285 watts. Power spikes could overwhelm the PSU.
The higher problems experienced by Chivalry and Metro Exodus further support this conclusion.
Consider disabling the GPU and testing with integrated graphics to see if the behavior changes.
You might also try using a more robust PSU, ideally at least 850 watts. You may need to purchase one that meets or exceeds this requirement, unless you're certain it's the right fix.
Cyberpunk, horizon forbidden west, witcher etc... none of these intense games seem to have this problem, which is definitely more than chivalry and metro in some cases. I don’t think it points to anything specific; I was just highlighting the randomness. Also, I can run those stress tests all day and the PC never fails—they are definitely more demanding than regular games. It’s a strange issue and I can’t reproduce it consistently, just happens randomly between events. 750W is more than enough for the system.
I understand that Horizon forbidden west presents greater challenges, though we're unsure what internal factors contribute to these difficulties.
750w isn't as significant as it seems; your GPU can require much higher power during short spikes.
I recommend disabling the discreet card and testing with an iGPU to see if problems persist. Performance will differ, but this could help identify any GPU-related issues.
The reliability monitor isn't providing a code number, and the event viewer is overwhelmed with events. I'll have to wait until it works again and record the time so I can examine it more closely. Regarding using an iGPU or another graphics card, the crashes occur unpredictably—sometimes for days without happening at all. Because I can't reliably reproduce the problem, I don't want to rely on my GPU for extended periods. Please note that these crashes typically occurred during saving, exiting, or loading rather than while playing directly, though a few happened in-game.
So this occurred four times during a 25-minute session of playing Chivalry. Each time the error appeared in the event viewer: the application name and module name both showed atkexComSvc.exe, version 1.0.0.1, with the timestamp 0x6156aa76. After removing Armoury Crate and all related plugins—approximately nine pieces of software—I was able to play the remainder of the night without any problems. To note, I had previously played Helldivers 2 for around 1.5 hours and it worked perfectly, which made the issues with Chivalry and other games more confusing.
