Screen on Infoblack after turning on secure boot in Valorant
Valorant requires enabling Secure boot when using Windows 11, which may cause a blank screen during startup, particularly on Gigabyte boards. This issue arises because Valorant only displays half of the functionality. There are two common methods for formatting an HDD—GPT and MBR. To use Secure boot, your C drive must be formatted as GPT. Attempting to boot with MBR-formatted drives will result in a black screen and prevent the PC from operating. Therefore, you should convert the drive from MBR to GPT before enabling Secure boot. UEFI – Unified extensible Firmware Interface
If your PC is under 13 years old, it uses UEFI BIOS. Around 2006, Intel updated the BIOS to support newer technologies. By about 2009, a group of hardware manufacturers established the UEFI standard. Older BIOS systems were limited and didn’t support features like mice or GUIs, so everything was keyboard-based. They couldn’t expand well and had strict memory limits, supporting only Master Boot Record (MBR) with up to 4 partitions per drive and a maximum size of 2.2 TB. UEFI overcame these constraints by introducing mouse support, a graphical interface, and expandability. It also supports both MBR and GPT drives.
GPT = GUID Partition Table
GUID = Global Unique ID – every GPT drive has a unique identifier
GPT drives can accommodate up to 255 partitions
The maximum size of a GPT drive/partition is 18.8 million TB
Valorant appears to require a specific setup, possibly an error page. In reality, it’s Vanguard, an anti-cheat system that enforces these requirements. If Vanguard was essential for gameplay, I’d consider it intrusive, as it grants more access than typical drivers. Is the game worth the risk?
