Screen appears black or dim and prevents access to Windows after a reboot.
Hello everyone, This matter involves a laptop primarily used for studying, relaxing, and playing some light games (such as Slay the Spire). The machine was built by Lenovo and features an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor with Radeon graphics, 16GB of RAM, and an SSD. Previously, it would fail to start normally, freezing during the Windows boot loop and requiring three restarts via the power button before finally appearing in blue screen mode, which would then prompt an error message. After that, restarting resolved the problem. This was the sole issue I experienced for about a year and a half. Now, the laptop has been acting up since about six months: every time I power it off, the display turns into a strange dark or dim state. Logging in to Windows is impossible, and it feels like the system is stuck. I’ve tried removing the CMOS battery and battery, holding the power button for several minutes, waiting a few minutes, reconnecting the components, and closing the laptop in hopes it will work again. This process takes up to half an hour and doesn’t always succeed.
I attempted various software fixes—reinstalling Windows, updating drivers, cleaning up applications—but nothing worked. Hardware-wise, I can’t replace the RAM since it’s likely soldered onto the motherboard. I’ve also observed that the dark screen appears only after charging the laptop. A second monitor doesn’t help at all. Other oddities include a boot loop that briefly restarts the system, after which the second screen becomes active and lets me access Windows. During this phase, the laptop screen remains off, making it impossible to regain functionality.
My main concerns are: possible faults with CMOS, battery issues, a damaged LCD cable, or internal motherboard problems. This isn’t the case where the display is just dim but functional; here the screen is completely unresponsive. If anyone has any suggestions beyond replacing the machine—please let me know.
