Hey everyone. I just upgraded to a 5950x from a 3700x for my home PC. But I’m facing some issues with CPU temperatures and performance. Without PBO enabled, temps and noise are normal, yet Cinebench scores are really low—around 65°C CPU (24°C ambient) at 3800MHz with 1.1V peak during testing, which seems okay but the score drops to 23,000. I thought it was PBO being off, causing low temps and poor performance. Then I turned it on and got 80°C CPU (24°C ambient) at 3726MHz with 1.261V peak during Cinebench, and a score of 22,000. Even worse, VRM temps hit 115°C after about 4 minutes and the CPU throttled to 500MHz. I tried adjusting settings in Ryzen Master—set 4200MHz and 1.1V limit, but the score improved to 27,000. Still, during a 10-minute throttle test, VRM reached 115°C again and the CPU dropped to 500MHz. I’m not sure what’s causing this. My guess is the motherboard might be the issue, given past VRM complaints. I’m really stuck and hoping someone can help me fix this quickly so I can get back to work. I’m open to swapping parts if needed. Here’s my full specs: Case NZXT H510 Elite, all fan slots filled, CPU Ryzen 9 5950X, cooler Kraken M22 1 Fan AIO, 32GB RAM (4x8GB DDR4 at 3600), motherboard MSI X570-A Pro (new bios), GPU MSI RTX3090, gaming graphics, PSU Cooler Master V850 GOLD 850W, Windows 10 Pro Build 19042.
The VRMs are rated for specific voltages, typically around 3700V. It seems the setup with the 3700x worked as expected.
I don't understand how to look up the VRM ratings. If you're referring to the D rank on the VRM tier list, it appears your motherboard isn't ranking well there. The 3700x didn't seem to have major issues, though its scores were lower than others, which is generally considered acceptable.
The board isn't ideal and is recognized for VRM cooling problems. Your case's airflow seems to be the main concern. Some users addressed it by installing an additional fan aimed at the VRMs. This solution resolved the VRM cooling issue on newer MSI x570 models.
I noticed your cooler has just one fan in the airflow unit. Think about switching to a model with two or three fans for better performance, but only if it doesn’t improve things. Also, check that you have the correct drivers installed. Another option is to upgrade your motherboard using the recommended list.

Are you utilizing every fan port on the motherboard? Some inexpensive gooseneck fans connect straight into mobo slots and can be aimed right at the parts. Of course, you need a port in a good spot to keep the VRM cool, and I’m not sure where they’re located on that board. There are also models that fit into a USB port if one is available. Thank you for the idea. Mobo ports remain in stock, but I’m not confident about a motherboard that doesn’t cool itself. I’ll pick a different one.
