Saving Games at High Speeds Fails to Deliver Optimal Performance
Hey everyone, I recently switched to gigabit internet and wanted to see how it performs. I opened Steam and downloaded the biggest game available. The download speed tops out around 33MB/s (about 264MB/s). I thought maybe the Steam servers would help, so I tried a few, cleared my Steam download cache, but nothing improved. My SSD looks fine—CrystalDiskMark shows solid write speeds (~500MB/s)—and my CPU is running at 4.3GHz boosted, not limiting things. I also checked other clients like Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, and Blizzard; they all max out around 16MB/s. I know some companies might cap speeds, but I’ve seen people get faster downloads without using VPNs or unusual settings. On my own tests with different devices connected via Ethernet, speeds hovered near 900Mbps in both directions. No clear reason I can think of. Any suggestions?
Have you performed routine speed tests? Then Steam initially loads quickly before gradually slowing down, especially during big downloads. What modem or router model do you use? A long time ago I observed my downloads began fast but then dropped rapidly, especially with large files. I discovered that both my router and modem were overheating and causing the slowdown. I installed heatsinks and a fan (since I own both devices). This resolved the issue, maintaining consistent speeds throughout. I’ve applied similar upgrades to all my modems and routers since. Most models operate on 12V, so adding a fan is straightforward in most setups. My current router is an AmpliFi Alien, which displays CPU temperature and experienced a slight drop of over 20 degrees.
Sure, I ran some speed tests and found about 900mb/s going in and out over my Ethernet link. The downloads begin slowly and gradually increase, typically hitting peak performance within roughly a minute. I didn’t expect it to be limited by heat, though. I purchased a Netgear Nighthawk R6700v3 a few years ago for a very reasonable price and it’s performed well without any problems—especially considering the good value I got from the sale. It seems likely that prolonged heavy use might start to cause some thermal issues.
