Safe to fly with a checked bag containing a computer and CPU installed.
I visited Atlanta earlier this week and picked up a 5900x and an Asus Dark Hero at mircocenter. I’m thinking about packing the motherboard into my checked luggage for the return trip. When I arrived last night, I figured installing the CPU would reduce the number of boxes on my way home. I have a few questions: will the CPU stay securely in place without a cooler? I’m pretty sure yes, but if the socket becomes loose and the CPU moves around, I might end up with bent pins. Also, I don’t expect theft—there will be two laptops in the bag, so I’ll place the motherboard box inside another one. That way, if the bag is checked, they’ll just see a brown box.
