s and tips about overclocking the Asus Gtx 980 Gold Edition
I made this my first contribution here. I usually find solutions online, but few people have my graphics card, so I’m checking if I’m doing it correctly. I searched for several guides on overclocking and have a general understanding of the process. I was using Asus’s GPU Tweak / Monitor, but I tend to prefer EVGA’s Precision X. (My settings in Asus software weren’t being saved for some reason.)
I own the Asus GTX 980 20th Anniversary Gold Edition card, which was marketed as the "fastest 980 on the market." According to GPU-Z, it has a clock speed of 1317, memory at 1753, and boost at 1431. I then adjusted it in Precision X to achieve a clock speed of 1447, memory at 2003, and boost at 1561. My in-game temperatures (for FFXIV on DX11/WoW) don’t increase significantly even after overclocking, reaching a max of around 57°C, which is acceptable. I’m cautious not to strain the GPU further. Also, my power target only goes up to 106%, whereas others claim it should reach 125%. I have a picture of my setup here. Any advice would be really appreciated!
Your GPU temperatures remain relatively stable during games since it isn't operating at maximum capacity. To evaluate the worst-case scenario, try using Valley or Heaven. Allow it to run for a short period or press the benchmark button while overclocking. If you don't experience overheating or artifacts, the overclocking adjustment is likely effective.
KozmoKavanaugh shared his initial experience here, noting he often finds solutions but struggles with graphics card settings. He used Asus's GPU Tweak / Monitor and prefers EVGA's Precision X, though his Asus software settings weren't saved. He owns an Asus GTX 980 20th Anniversary Gold Edition card, which he claims is the fastest on the market according to GPU-Z. His overclocked version shows improved clock speeds and memory stats, but game performance remains stable without significant gains. He also mentions his power target is capped at 106%, which seems unusual compared to other guides suggesting up to 125%. He provided a screenshot of his current configuration for reference.
Lorenzo3D also wants to buy this gtx... what about overclocking and maximum temperatures? Are the fans quiet?
I'm from there.
My model is an Asus gtx 980 ti gold edition. It only makes a slight coil whining noise here and there, I can hear it only when the fans are idling and in a completely silent room.
I tried the gtx 980 ti Matrix Platinum first, but had to replace it because of very noticeable coil whining.
If the price difference between the two cards was over 100 GBP (147 USD or 131 EUR), I would choose the Matrix.
It's odd that Asus took down the statement on their official site about the gtx 980 ti gold edition being free from buzz and coil whining right after I bought it!!
Concerning overclocking, I only see a slight improvement in 5fps, so I don’t really use it.
When maxed out at 1440p for general gaming, the temperature reaches about 65ºC.
If you’re playing at 1080p, my advice would be to go with the Asus Strix!
The GPU temperatures remain relatively stable in games since it isn't operating at maximum capacity. For a more extreme test, try Valley or Heaven. Let it run for a short time or use the benchmark feature while overclocking. If you don't notice overheating or artifacts, the overclock likely works well.
