I installed Windows 10 recently and was wondering how to revert back to Windows 7 if needed. I’m concerned about losing files during the switch. If I go back, will I need to reinstall from a Windows 7 disk? Will that erase everything? I’m feeling a bit anxious, especially with my internet connection being slow. Downloading all my games would be a problem, and I already have a heavily modified Skyrim without installing every mod. Please help calm me down.

Yes, that's what it sounds like. Everything seems to be gone now.

You selected a specific method for setting up the installation. What was your choice?

It’s not completely hopeless. You can set up a partition on your drive and transfer your personal files like pictures and documents there. However, you won’t be able to move program files for obvious reasons. When you reinstall Windows 7, choose advanced options and format the partition windows while keeping the partition where your files were stored. After restarting, return to the desktop, drag your files into the right location, and remove the partition—making sure to extend your window slightly to fill the empty space. -EDIT- I just rechecked your message and it looks like you reinstalled over your existing Windows 7 setup. If that’s the case, then yes, you’re in a tough spot. But it’s worth verifying if there’s a folder named Windows.old in your C: directory. If so, all your old files should be there. Follow the steps above.

It's just finished installing and it's starting up. Hope it works. I'm worried I'll end up with a very slow 20 kb/s connection after using up our data, which is really frustrating. Do you have any suggestions for getting back to Windows 7 without losing my files?

It comes right after the format section, meaning it's almost too late.

If you used the erase everything option, you will need recovery software, otherwise window.old should have your win 7 install and personal files. Do not cancel it, Microsoft may not have implemented a fallback operation it is a technical preview.

I just updated it using the Windows update feature after downloading the client from their site. It seems to be starting its installation right away and will boot soon. I'll keep you posted. I'm hopeful, though I think I'm just ignoring it. This is really frustrating. I tried again and it booted off, which makes me think some of you were trying to trick me. All my concerns are addressed—everything looks good now.

Warning!!! Windows 10 doesn’t work well with partitions. A friend used the same USB but on a divided drive instead of using the full space, causing frequent crashes and preventing proper startup about 80% of the time. Always save beta versions to a backup drive.
