Hello! Please accept my apologies for sharing this here. How should I submit a question about recommendations for retro PC builds focused on gaming? Which forum area would be most suitable? I’m planning to create separate sections—one for DOS games from the 80s and 90s, and another for games from the 90s through early 2000s. Thanks!
An 80's or 90's setup would reflect a 486 age, which is uncommon. The early 00s would resemble P2/P3 or the early Athlon period.
DOS games run smoothly on minimal systems, so a full PC isn't essential... Consider using an emulator such as DOSbox https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1. Many players still choose classic CRT displays for that authentic experience.
For keeping costs in check with 90s/2000s titles, opt for slightly newer yet more affordable gear. A Core 2 Duo or Quad, GT 730, that runs XP smoothly without draining power excessively. Swap the high-end 6800 for the 9500 GT, which uses less energy and is more budget-friendly. Skip the costly Pentium III dual-chip board in favor of a budget Core 2 Duo—same performance at a fraction of the price and easier availability.
