s about network learning
I possess networking expertise and recently gained some equipment after learning about free computer assistance. People were impressed and donated items once they heard I wanted to improve. Currently, I’m using a Netgear GS724T managed switch. I now have a Force10 S4810 model. My setup includes two SPF+ 10G ports, one dual 10G SPF+ card, and a dual SPF 1G server port card. I saved money by buying a RJ45 to USB cable and reset the switch to factory settings while learning CLI commands. I received a PowerEdge R510 with an internal drive and the mentioned network cards.
I installed Windows Server 2016 Standard and am trying to find a way to register it. I was given some 72GB SAS drives, but now I need to save for additional caddies. It cost a lot, but saving takes time when funds are limited. More questions follow:
1. Could anyone share tips on best practices for configuring and setting up this network setup?
2. Where should I learn more about configuring VPNs? I’ve watched videos but feel a bit lost.
3. For future needs, I’ll need a second processor and more RAM. Any recommendations on affordable places to check prices so I can plan my savings?
4. Good resources for studying advanced networking concepts and terminology would help me grasp the details better.
I appreciate any guidance or advice you can provide. If my questions are unclear, let me know and I’ll expand as much as possible within my current understanding. Thank you!
1.- On www.support.dell.com you’ll discover whitepapers and documentation for your server and switch. For Force10, use the service tag of your switch to set up an account in the support portal at https://www.force10networks.com/CSPortal...Login.aspx. Download the latest firmware and update your switch. Compatible SFPs are available at www.fs.com—especially useful if you acquire another Force10 switch, enabling features like VLTi, LACP, etc. Your switch supports L3 protocols such as BGP and OSPF; for Layer 2 tasks consider VLAN routing or port trunking/hybrid mode to connect to your Windows server.
2.- For your VPN setup on the Windows server, refer to this tutorial: https://www.thomasmaurer.ch/2016/10/how-...rver-2016/. Google and YouTube are excellent resources for this. I’m unsure if you have a static IP with your ISP, but services like DynDNS can help if needed.
3.- eBay is a helpful resource. YouTube and Google also offer many guides; feel free to ask for scripts related to Force10 setups I’ve worked on.
4.- You can find affordable Force10 compatible 1GB or 10GB transceivers at sf.com.
