Hey! I was considering setting up a home server since most used server components these days are available at discounted prices, particularly for memory. I'm planning to use an e5-2697 v4 with 18 cores and a random ATX Chinese motherboard from eBay. My questions are: 1. Will reducing memory speed affect performance, especially if I plan to add more sticks later? 2. Is it possible to combine ECC and non-ECC memory modules? (I assume ECC is optional and can be disabled if needed) Cheers!

Yes, you can combine unbuffered and buffered ECC channels in one configuration.

the jingsha branded board appears solid, GN tested a dual socket version and found it to be decent overall. it comes with unexpected features like m.2 slots and room for a wifi module. you won't find these in typical server boards, nor in the more expensive official x99 models that might not even support xeons. in short, it works well for my needs—link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175802067440
