It struggles significantly against the 5800X in compression and decompression tasks and edges out slightly in a few rendering tools such as Corona and Blender. This aligns with AMD’s SMT design being robust for those workloads. It performs well in code compilation, Cinebench, and certain Adobe CC benchmarks. Generally, it falls short of the 5800X in most games, though the differences aren’t huge. It edges out the 5600X, but the four-core performance isn’t strong enough to challenge SMT-equipped processors in Ryzen’s typical environments.
What will be noteworthy is the process of boosting clock speeds. If the 12600KF reaches higher frequencies, it should narrow the performance gap or surpass the 5800X most often, though overclocking doesn’t significantly improve gaming performance (around a 3.5% boost). As with gaming, these changes usually don’t noticeably change power usage. I remember the 5800X reviews suggesting it often outperforms the 10900K in games, but applying a typical 5.1GHz boost can close the gap entirely, letting the 10900K catch up and match the 5800X even with PBO.
Gaming wise that 12600k looks really well against stock 5600X and 5800X. The problem is, almost no one uses those in stock config. Even my old 3600X is perma locked at 4.7GHz cause the NH-D15 is just soooooo good. Also i noticed most tests are done with 3200MHz memory and we know how significant RAM speed can be with Ryzen 5000.
In most cases, AMD sees little benefit in games after OC. Sometimes it drops, particularly with full-core overclocking which reduces single core boosts—useful for certain titles. Usually, any improvement comes from PBO. As seen earlier, the results are modest. For instance, the 10900k outperformed the 5800x by more than three times with a small OC compared to a 3.5% gain with PBO. The 10900k improved by 11.5%, while the 5800x saw a 3.5%. The 10700k achieved a 14% increase, and the 10600K even reached nearly 17% from OC. Of course, this applies to Skylake; Alderlake might behave differently.
I haven't run any OC tests lately due to the GPU shortage. It's not necessary to push people's CPUs when their 1060 can't keep up with the 5600X.
