Ryzen with USB-C connectivity
Hello, I'm setting up a new PC with a Ryzen 5600 and planning to connect it to my laptop using a USB-C dual HDMI dock. I found the ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING board, which includes a USB-C header on the back. I'm wondering if it will work with your dock, considering it uses a USB-C Gen 1 connector. I'm concerned about routing the connection through the motherboard if the Ryzen doesn't have a graphics card. I've also considered the 12400F model if there are issues with USB-C docks on Ryzen. Thanks for your assistance!
I'm not familiar with any alternative options besides Thunderbolt support on desktops.
To show the display you require a compatible platform. On the Intel side, using DP over USB-C typically needs an integrated GPU or a CPU with its own graphics unit—avoiding the F-part. The display would pass through that but might experience reduced performance in games or other intensive tasks on a separate GPU. It can be tricky to confirm if a specific motherboard supports it, especially for AMD systems. Alternatively, a motherboard such as an Asus ProArt with robust Thunderbolt support allows connecting the GPU directly. In this scenario, you also need a Thunderbolt dock that supports full Thunderbolt, not just USB-C.
You're considering using your PC as a media center or emulator with a dock, but you're unsure if it's worth the effort. It sounds like you're weighing performance needs against complexity. If you're not keen on the hassle, you might skip it. You mentioned needing something powerful like a 5600G with USB-C Mobo, which seems like a big commitment. Let me know if you'd like more options!
I've checked two mobos with Thunderbolt 3 compatibility (no display input) and observed that the iGPU output functions correctly on them. One model uses only USB-C ports without TB support, while the other has both Thunderbolt and USB-C. Intel 7, 9th, and 13th generation chips seem to work together with TB support. It appears USB-C connectivity might be linked to TB functionality.
The USB-C header on the back of the -F is meant to handle sound, though it’s a Gen 1 port and performs poorly. I tried it with my phone. My XE supports connections that regular B550 can’t.
