Ryzen processor with Thunderbolt 3 support
I recently assembled a Ryzen 9 3900X system with an Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming Motherboard. I’m curious if Thunderbolt 3 PCIe cards are compatible with this CPU. If not, anyone have suggestions for a reliable USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C dock available in the UK that would support devices like my CamLink 4K and Logitech Lightspeed Receiver?
My recollection is that only certain x570 boards support thunderbolt, and often the card and motherboard need to be customized together. If a compatible thunderbolt card exists for that board, it’s usually designed specifically by the manufacturer. Things are constantly evolving, so this information might not be current. Someone I knew was looking for an affordable yet reliable x570 with thunderbolt. The advertised price was around $350 in the USA at the time, just for the motherboard. I persuaded her to go with a B550 instead. It was cheaper, better quality, and offered more input options. Edited January 26, 2021 by Bombastinator
As mentioned by Bombastinator, you need a compatible adapter for your board. Your model lacks a thunderbolt connector, so you can't install Thunderbolt 3 ports. Some earlier models included them by design, and Gigabyte updated all X570 boards to include the header.
