Hi everyone. I’m setting up a custom backup server using Ubuntu Server 20.04.3 and Urbackup. For the HDD setup, I’ll use two Seagate Exos or Iron Wolf 4 TB drives in RAID 1. The system will run continuously, so I need a reliable board with ECC memory support. A regular ECC module would be ideal. I noticed Asrock B450 Steel supports ECC—does that mean it’s suitable? I’m thinking pairing it with a Ryzen 1600AF or similar six-core CPU. Any advice on the best board for this configuration?

This situation presents a challenge. Current platforms require registered DIMMs, and only unbuffered ECC is supported. Many AMD AM4 boards, especially those outside the PRO line, lack proper ECC validation. It seems the issue has been resolved—using standard non-ECC memory is acceptable for basic home backups. The benefit exists, but it’s not essential for a personal server setup.

Only Epyc and Threadripper platforms offer ECC support. Ryzen processors are not compatible.

Thanks for your assistance. I believe using regular DDR4 RAM is the best choice. It makes building the system easier and works perfectly for a home backup setup.

Spec sheet confirms compatibility with AMD's statement "Yes (requires motherboard support)" for the Ryzen 9 7950X.

Absolutely, I understand. He’s definitely not reliable. My ECC setup is running smoothly on the ASUS Prime X570-B board with 5700X.
