Hello, I set up a Ryzen 9 5950X yesterday and noticed it overheating to 87°C during Minecraft with Optifine. When the CPU cools down, the game runs smoothly, but after about 20 seconds it stops. Could my thermal paste application have affected this? I’m using an NZXT H9 Elite case, a NZXT Kraken X73 RGB with Cryonault thermal paste, which is around 2 to 3 years old.

MC with mods and texture packs can significantly raise temperatures, often reaching 80-90°C. This level is typical with such modifications. Check for conflicts, as optifine has previously caused major performance drops.

Your Cinebench results are what they are. With AMD's boost method, cooling effectiveness is better judged by scores instead of temperatures, aiming for consistent 80s performance. Possible issues include poor thermal paste or a hotter chip than before. A low score suggests cooling problems, while an average score means the CPU is just warm.

Optifine is the solution. The speed drops from "omfg that's insane" to "Jesus Christ am I mining Bitcoins or what?" A few minutes of lagging, then smooth performance with perfect frame rates.

It seems the game becomes slow and hard to play after a short time, which might be due to the temperature.

Do you have CAM installed? I've noticed some Kraken AIOs require it, often needing pump ramp adjustments, while fans can typically be managed elsewhere.

It might be worth checking with Cinebench or another CPU test to confirm. For R23, the expected score should be near 30k, possibly with a slight variation of about 1000 points. If it's lower than that, it could indicate a cooling problem.
