Not really... Many users stick with the same overclocking methods for years without problems. Before attempting any voltage changes on a Ryzen chip at that price, do some research. Ryzen comes out of the box with limited tuning options, so you should start with a fully stock configuration and run P95 Small FTTs. Check the peak vcore during testing—reset your monitor settings afterward and let it stabilize. The safe upper limit is what your chip can handle without harming its components. Exceeding that risk damaging the silicon, which can cause instability or failure over time. One tester spent two hours pushing the limits and found their chip became unreliable within a few months, even at the maximum safe voltage.
I just did that a few days back and my motherboard was running at 1.45v-1.5v while it got hot. This is my first time using Ryzen since all my previous chips were Intel, and I also managed to degrade an i5 4670k where the stock clock speeds weren't consistent after six years.
Ryzen experiences significant voltage spikes during idle, reaching up to 1.5V under certain conditions. These high levels are rare and typically occur only with minimal workloads on your desktop. It’s highly unlikely any Ryzen CPU, including the 3950X, can sustain performance at 1.4-1.5V while under load. The readings you’re seeing seem incorrect. Try running P95 Small FTTs, wait a minute, then restart HWiNFO to check the updated values after it stabilizes.
It seems adjusting one of the CCXs can improve single-thread performance. I test various multipliers (43.00/42.75/42.50/42.25) at 1.256V and 1.219V under load with a 1900MHz clock, and it stabilizes at 1900 MHz. Higher speeds aren't achievable at the moment.
This follows the default settings, resulting in fewer than 1v?
