Hey there! It’s finally time to refresh my old workstation, so I put together a new setup. Here are the details: CPU – Ryzen 9 3900X, motherboard – Asus ROG STRIX x570-e, RAM – 4x16GB at 3200MHz, GPU – GTX 1070 (planning to upgrade to 2080Ti), storage – SATA SSD from my previous machine, PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD, power supply – 700W Chieftec Smart, and Windows 10 OS.

The problem I’m dealing with is this: when I tried to download the latest BIOS from ASUS, it kept showing a 404 error. But now it seems to work fine. I attempted to update again, and the download was still accessible via the online update tool in BIOS settings. I also tried installing Windows 10 from the Microsoft site, but kept hitting errors. Since that didn’t help, I considered switching to Ubuntu to test Blender on Linux. That worked surprisingly well – a real surprise!

However, I’m still stuck during the installation process, especially with Windows 10. I thought Ubuntu might be a good benchmark, but it’s not resolving the issue. I managed to run Ubuntu live from an installation media, but only after replacing my old M.2 SSD with a SATA drive. I even cloned a fresh Windows install image and it functioned perfectly – just needed to enter the new license key because the laptop was using an OEM license.

Anyone else have faced similar challenges? I’m a bit concerned about the PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD, but I don’t have concrete proof to point fingers. Let me know!

The CPU's 8-pin port provides four power 4 grounds while the 8-pin GPU features 3x12V, three ground points, and two sense grounds. The physical layouts differ significantly. Your power supply must match an 8-pin CPU connector. Look for a 12V EPS extension for your CPU; PCI-E slots won't fit.

Can you link to and operate the SSD on another computer? Which M.2 port is connected there? Does it function in the alternative M.2 port?
