As mentioned, 3700x tends to be the optimal choice (preferable over 3800x) unless the cost gap is just a few dollars. Even in that case, should the extra performance of 3800x justify upgrading to a higher TDP and power rating, it depends on whether the gains are worth it—especially when using the stock cooler. I’ll stick with 3700x if the decision comes down to 3800 versus 3700. A 3900x only makes sense if you’re generating more value by adding 50% more threads, saving you a lot of time daily.
The motherboard is in your possession. If it supports a 3900x, it makes sense to purchase one. If not (and that needs verification), then acquiring a 3900x isn’t advisable unless you also replace the board. It’s not out of the question it can’t even manage a 3700x—so if that’s true, you’ll likely need a different motherboard. In either scenario, we’ll revert to a 3900x.
