ryzen 7 7800x3d troubles?
Hey everyone, just wanted to share what happened with my recent build. I installed a Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, an MSI gaming trio 4070 TI GPU, a 2TB NVMe 32GB SSD (two sticks), G.Skill Trident 5Z RAM from Gigabyte, and the Noctua DH-U12A cooler with an NZXT H9 Flow case. The motherboard is the latest BIOS version released on April 26, 2023, and I made sure to flash it before installing Windows.
I ran a few tests over three days. On the first day, my CPU was at the 15th percentile during the benchmark, which didn’t seem serious at the time. The next day I noticed a peculiar sound—kind of coil whine—only during the CPU test. My PC gets very hot quickly and caps around 79-80°C. When I checked the results, it showed 1% noise, whereas earlier it was 15%. I repeated the test thinking it was random, but then it stopped completely. After booting up Rust, I stayed under 65°C during playback and didn’t hear any unusual noises. It seems to be running well, though it still gave me some concern.
Is my CPU overheating? Is the benchmark really stressing it? Any advice or insights would be super helpful.
P.S., another thing that stood out was that core#2’s maximum clock speed was 5700 MHz—definitely a bit high for this setup.
Stop relying on userbenchmark.
Disable userbenchmark usage.
Check if chipset drivers are installed.
For CPU speed tracking, consider Ryzen Master or HWinfo PS.
Reminder: Avoid using userbenchmark.
Thanks for your response! I'm going to stop using userbench moving forward. Since I had to research chipset drivers, I doubt they're that important. I'm downloading them now. Regarding CPU speed monitoring, are you talking about clock speeds specifically? Which metrics should I focus on? I've heard VSOC voltages can be problematic, especially on this card, and it might be damaging it if too high. My checks show it's within spec, but I'm not sure what I'm dealing with. Based on what you shared, do you think my CPU is in trouble or just malfunctioning? Should I consider returning it for repair or am I overreacting? Also, could you describe the noise you heard? (Just a reminder, only from userbench — I won't use it again!) Thank you for your help; it really helps a lot.
Card? You're referring to the CPU case which is still in development. From what I observed, a voltage above 1.3V is considered safe, though I'd suggest keeping it at 1.25. Regarding CPU temperatures, those Ryzens tend to get hot, and I don't have much experience with them. As for the CPU clock speed, I'm pretty sure the HWMonitor you're using might be reading it incorrectly. Since the SOC voltage is around 1V, it's likely you didn't enable EXPO/XMP.
The CPU is operating perfectly at 75-80°C during heavy loads on the 7800X3D. For coil wine, this issue occurs but poses no danger. I've noticed some GB boards have similar problems (though it was previously addressed). It may resolve after a while, but if it becomes very loud or bothersome, consider returning or exchanging the motherboard.
I meant the CPU, that makes sense. I didn’t turn on EXPO, and I didn’t adjust any BIOS settings after learning some ASUS boards failed when EXPO was enabled. I went from a full custom loop to an air-cooled setup, which aligns with the fact these Ryzen chips seem to overheat. Thanks for all the reassurance and support! You really helped me avoid panic. The test I ran on userbench during the CPU phase showed no issues—just a brief 2-second noise. I might run stress tests with better benchmarks later, but if it recurs, I’ll consider returning the motherboard. Appreciate your quick replies and the confidence you gave me! My old system crashed last week, so I’ve been extra careful now. Thanks again! Best, Fidel Cashflows
