Hello, Two weeks ago I added a Ryzen 7 5800x to my setup after upgrading from the 3700x. Since then, my system has had occasional crashes—unexpected restarts or BSODs. Checking Event Viewer points to hardware issues, especially with the CPU. These crashes tend to happen when the system is idle for a while or when browsing online. They don’t always occur during gameplay and usually last a few days. The recurring errors include a fatal hardware error: Processor Core Error, Machine Check Exception, Bus/Interconnect, APIC ID 0. After some research, it seems this issue is more widespread than I thought. I’m unsure what to do next, as online advice has been mixed—like undervolting or adjusting BIOS settings. I’m hoping for guidance and a clear path to resolve this. Here are the specs of my current setup:
- Processor: Ryzen 7 5800x
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H-CF
- Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 2080 SUPER (MSI Edition)
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB @ 3,200mhz (XMP enabled via BIOS)
From what I understand, the problem might be related to the motherboard compatibility. I’m open to suggestions!
The crash report indicates your first core is malfunctioning. Have you performed any overclocking or undervolting? Is the most recent BIOS version installed?
The BIOS is completely current, and no overclocking or underclocking has been performed yet. But since the CPU wasn’t brand new, it’s possible it was previously overclocked.
I think the issue might lie with your motherboard. It seems to be a very budget-friendly model with significantly weaker VRM. The original chip has a 65W power draw, whereas the 5800X uses 105W, and it actually draws more than that.
Consider checking if the motherboard is compatible with newer components. A B550M PRO or B550M-A WiFi could work well depending on your needs.
My situation isn't the biggest, and I'm restricted to MATX components. As I'm currently relocating my home, I haven't started planning a complete hardware overhaul until I'm settled. I'd prefer to wait after moving so I can replace my motherboard and case then. As discussed earlier, the WHEA warnings appear only when idle (system locked for 15–25 minutes during activities like eating). It hasn't happened while gaming yet, though I don't want the issue to persist and worsen.
