I'm planning to assemble a PC this summer, but something is holding me back. The upcoming AMD 4000 series CPUs and the latest GPUs are making it tough. My current setup will mostly be for gaming with maybe some light video/photo work. Right now I’m thinking of buying and building the PC immediately, except for a new graphics card and keeping my RX 580 until the 3000 series arrives. The main dilemma is choosing a CPU: either get a Ryzen 3800X right away (pros: immediate build, cons: possible performance drop) or wait for the 4800X (pros: better performance, cons: long wait and uncertainty). I’d appreciate your advice and any real-world insights you can share. Thanks!

If you require a PC immediately, proceed with the purchase if you're not in a hurry; otherwise, hold off for a moment.

If you're not in a rush, wait for Zen 3. If you need it right away, go with a 3700x and make adjustments. The 3800x isn't worth the upgrade unless they match the price.

You might prefer starting with a third-generation processor and simply switch to a fourth-generation one later, selling the older component once it becomes available.

Currently the 3800x model costs $470 CAD while the 3700x is $440, making the $30 difference quite reasonable

Sure, just to clarify, unless you're profiting from your work, I'm keeping it simple.

Thanks, actually I haven’t really considered that before. The main issue is I doubt there’d be significant interest unless prices are heavily reduced, which would mean I’d lose about $100 or more.

The additional $30 will provide roughly 1 to 3 frames per second in games, especially on a more demanding processor.
