I’m looking to improve my CPU performance. Should I go for the Ryzen 7 2700 or the Intel Core i5-9400F? Think about how you mainly use your PC—gaming.
The 9400F performs well in general scenarios, though its upgrade options are quite restricted.
The 2700 tends to perform marginally better than the 2600X on average, with the lower-end GPU showing even tighter CPU performance than advertised. The 1% lows in the 9400F are more noticeable in CPU-heavy titles compared to the 2700. In most games, the 2700x closely matches the 9400F, though Far Cry stands out as the exception.
I think it's okay. The 1600AF manual OC matches roughly the same level as 9400f. A 2700 is decent but not as strong for gaming. With a 1050ti or similar up to around 2060, performance differences won't be huge. I'm considering 1600AF because it has six cores and 12 threads, which is sufficient now. You can upgrade later to eight cores. If you were me, I'd purchase one with good cooling and an MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX board (or Mortar Max if you prefer mikroATX). Eventually, you'll be able to move to a 4th generation Ryzen setup.
I’ve upgraded already and I’m really pleased with my pick of the i5-9400F. My GTA V performance improved from 60fps on my old i5-7400 to an average of 170fps now, which is a significant boost. Also, after posting this thread, I discovered that Intel processors generally handle gaming better, which aligns with how I usually use my PC.
