I switched the two 140s to exhaust positions. I also removed the Y-Splitter and connected each header separately. The temperatures matched perfectly. Now I’m thinking maybe the thermal paste needs a swap. I used Arctic MX-4, which seems solid. If you notice any obvious problems, please let me know. Thanks!
I understand this thread might feel a bit dated, but I wanted to share my experience since it’s my first desktop CPU. It’s good to hear others are curious too. Here’s what I’ve noticed:
CPU: R9-5900X
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 (Black)
Paste: Arctic MX-4
Board: MSI B550-A Pro
Case: Fractal Design Define 7 XL Fans
Fans: Arctic P14 (x3, front), Dynamic X2 GP14 (x1, rear)
Temperatures: Idling lows around 30°C (not much running except Argus Monitor)
If you run anything but Argus, it stays in the low 30s.
During Cinebench R23 looped runs, I hit about 85°C max.
All-core frequency peaks at 4.66GHz during R23.
Curve Optimiser: -1 on all cores
PBO: Enabled
I was a bit concerned about paste amount because it’s my first build. Seeing spikes above 50°C when loading a browser or watching a video is unusual and makes me nervous. I’m not sure if this is typical for this setup.
