In my previous message I covered the overheating issues I experienced with my new 5800x CPU. I discovered a fix by updating to the latest Windows feature update, version 20H2. I also kept multiple mirror backups on a storage drive and installed the one just before the update. The temperatures returned to normal. I’m not sure what specifically in this update caused the CPU to drop from around 30°C to low 60s during idle. This is just a reminder to install the Windows 10 Feature Update version 20H2. Someone might help clarify this.
I own a Ryzen 7 3800x and it tends to idle inconsistently. The built-in cooler wasn’t effective, so I switched to an aftermarket HSF cooler. That change really improved performance. Adding an IC Graphite Thermal Pad also made a noticeable impact. While it’s not superior to paste, it might be a few degrees higher in comparison. Overall, the setup is straightforward and delivers reliable results. Thanks to its slight flexibility, it ensures even contact across the entire surface thanks to compression forces.
The 3800x behaves quite differently from what you expect. Although the peak temperatures are high, the idle temps remain in the low 40s at stock settings. This is noticeably cooler than many other CPUs. Still, it’s still significantly warmer than the 5800x even at its default configuration. So while I do understand your concern, it doesn’t really affect this discussion. If you mentioned that my CPU also experienced higher temperatures after updating to Version 20H2, that would be a different situation. By the way, I usually run MX4, but I might give the newer MX5 a shot. The main goal of this post was to alert people about the heat problems introduced by the update. Maybe someone here can help identify what caused it. As I mentioned, temperatures dropped once I went back to the version I had before.
