Alder Lake presents several challenges when purchasing budget components. You won’t face RAM compatibility issues because the 12600k supports higher voltages in memory controllers, but my recent purchase of the i5-12400F can’t handle DDR4 3600 at the base speed (like 1800 MHz). It would only work with DDR4 3600 at a slower clock speed (around 900 MHz), which adds significant latency. This made me settle for DDR4 3200 to prevent system crashes during stress tests and heavy tasks, since Intel promoted Alder Lake as a platform for RAM overclocking on compatible boards. My XMP profile was set to DDR4 3600, so I had to manually adjust settings for the first time since the Athlon XP era. Still, it performed reasonably well at 3200 MHz. Intel also removed AVX-512 support from Alder Lake CPUs released this year—previously an unconfirmed feature, but crucial for 2021 models. AVX-512 greatly impacts RPCS3 performance for PS3 emulation. Likely, they’re targeting Xeon users for workloads requiring it, while keeping prices higher for those needs. I’d have chosen the MSI PRO B660M-A board if I didn’t need extra SATA ports, but opted for the MSI Mortar B660m WIFI DDR4 instead, which added $40 to the cost for the necessary 6 ports.

I’d also want to verify the board’s VRM cooling system—both for preventing throttling and extending its lifespan. The 12600F offers improved memory support and includes four E-cores that can be used for background tasks during gaming. This advice seems outdated; it’s not wise to stick with a K-core CPU on a non-Z-series board given how powerful these chips are now, especially since they’re often already overclocked. It’s not the same as back in the Sandy Bridge era when you could boost a 3.3 GHz i5-2500K to 4.5 GHz for much better performance on a Z-series with a solid cooler.

Yup was considering the same idea, planning for a CPU with over 6 cores and a quicker model. The board needs solid VRMs, and I’m willing to spend an extra $50 if it helps. Initially, I thought about a more affordable setup, but that’s not ideal since performance drops over time—my old 4770K was still functional back then!
