I'm choosing parts to upgrade my son's rig, the poor youngster (19 in 2 weeks) only has my old i7-4770K (a great CPU but 9 years old!) along with a 1660S Was thinking of getting him a 5600X around 220EUR, then saw the 5600, 15EUR less and near as good, but it's out of stock at decent price where I live (France)... Now there's the 5500, it's only 175EUR now, read bad reviews about it (GN for example), but it seems to perform only around 15% slower than a 5600X; plus my son only has a GTX1660S on a 1440p monitor, and playing non demanding games like CS:GO, wonder if it'll even change anything for him as he'll certainly always GPU bound ! Any advice ? EDIT : the 5500 is now 150 EUR, maybe a better deal ?
4770K pairs well with a GTX 1660S. Consider refining it by removing the case and swapping the thermal paste for liquid metal. The 4790K in my wife's system clocks at 4.8Ghz all-core 5.0Ghz single core, which remains quite capable for her GTX 1080—a GPU that outperforms the GTX 1660S.
It feels reasonable though 12100 looks strong for a $100 item. Still, if you're purchasing now, 12400 is also available. Both options will surpass a 4770k.
Yes, though it might seem old, it’s comparable to Intel’s 11th generation because it uses the same 14nm process. Pushing it to 5GHz would make a great family project, and if the chip fails, I’d consider switching to a different CPU. The i5-12400 would then be my choice.
Initially I considered 12400, but B660 boards are quite costly, and it's hard to determine which cooler matches the new socket...
Eventually you told me, a 5500, 12100 or even 12400 wasn't a great upgrade over the 4770K. I'm planning to get a 12600KF, which should cost around EUR 270. That CPU looks solid and I hope it lasts as long as the 4770K.
