Hey Tom, I’m trying to find a solid motherboard for my upcoming project. You mentioned needing something compatible with the Ryzen 5000 series, preferably black with built-in WiFi and a few SATA ports available. RGB lighting would be nice too. Any suggestions? Thanks! -TomPot

A520, B550, X570 should be Zen 3 ready. And some board support BIOS update without a CPU even... or some shops will offer BIOS update at the time of purchase.

Some SATA ports stay active even when using a M.2 drive, which is common on most motherboards. The M.2 slot simply uses the existing SATA port. It mainly depends on what you're spending. I plan to get a B550-F gaming model. It isn't pre-installed, but it has a BIOS flashback feature so you don't need a compatible CPU to update the BIOS.

The only model I’m familiar with is the ASUS Crosshair Hero VII Black. This explains why it remains consistently out of stock.

It’s a bit of a gamble picking a board that works right away. No new chipset with Zen 3 came out, so boards are limited too. The timing of when it left the factory matters a lot for BIOS compatibility, and there’s no solid assurance. As mentioned before, choosing a board with flashback capability is your best option since it lets you update the BIOS without needing a CPU. You might also visit a store that provides tech support or repair services—they can help you get the update at a low cost or even free. Lastly, AMD offers strong assistance in this situation; they’ll send you an older CPU for updates and will mail it back once the work is done.

Are there still m2 SATA units being produced? The ones available seem to be PCie models that work alongside standard SATA connections.

Essentially, the key component is the traditional SATA and M.2 SATA drives, not NVMe M.2 options. You can find more details here: https://pcpartpicker.com/products/ssd
