I've been thinking about an upgrade for some time and opted to go with Zen 3 instead of the original 3600 plan. The pricing on the 3600 isn't ideal right now in the UK, which is a relief. However, the higher-than-expected costs for the 5000 series might make it less appealing. I've checked various posts and online info, but I'm still not finding a clear solution. My focus will be mainly on the 5600x or possibly the 5800x, though I'm skeptical about those options since gaming performance shouldn't differ much. I've seen many videos about B550 motherboards being unnecessary, with most people recommending X570 instead. "They're essentially the same price." In the UK, a B550 starts around £80 and an X570 around £135 – that's a big gap. It seems like the benefits are minimal for gaming, especially if I only need it for that purpose. Older boards could still be worth considering, but updates might take time. I've been waiting a while already, so I really want it soon. What do others think given these prices? Anyone else planning an upgrade? I'm currently upgrading from a Ryzen 5 1400 with an A320 motherboard. Also, I haven't experienced any issues with this board and don't think I've missed anything important. A few extra USB ports would be nice, but that's about it. Any feedback would be appreciated. The A320 isn't compatible with the 5000 series, though some BIOS updates might appear on a few boards. For models like A520, B550, x570, focus on devices offering the features you need—check USB ports and VRM strength (5600X usually has sufficient VRM). Compare prices without worrying too much. At launch, ensure the board supports BIOS flashing even without the CPU, as ASUS and MSI often provide this via USB.
I’ve learned that b550 and x570 are compatible with Zen 3. B450 and x470 will get a partial update in 2021 that offers limited features, while A320 and x370 won’t receive official updates until then, though a hack might work around that. It makes sense to buy the B550 motherboard right away. You can check its BIOS details beforehand, and since you already have a Ryzen processor, updating the BIOS later should be straightforward.
Right so another thing that has now confused me. i have a ryzen 5 1400. thats not compatible with b550...? that post you sent shows that if i buy a b550 it may not be compatible with the 5000 to post/boot? so if it has the wrong bios how to i get the 5000 to run on it...? im so confused now hahah
