Ryzen 5 chips compete on the Gigabyte B450M DS3H-CF board
My setup includes: motherboard from Gigabyte, Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB RAM, Corsair DDR4 2666MHz, NVMe SSD, and a 500GB NVMe drive. I’m looking for the best upgrade path to move from the Ryzen 5 2600X/3600X/5500/5600X series to the newer models like 2000/3000/5000N. I need advice on how to change the CPU without replacing the motherboard, while keeping my current hardware for a year or so. My budget is around 200€.
Consider a 5600 or 5600X if you can afford it. It surpasses all the Ryzen 7 options you mentioned, especially compared to the 5700X. For gaming only, eight cores aren't necessary. It runs smoothly on your existing setup, making it a practical choice. Upgrading your motherboard isn't advisable unless it fails—better invest in a stronger GPU later.
I wouldn't suggest it unless you need a particular function, and consider getting a new motherboard just for that purpose. The DS3H works well as a reliable board even without a comprehensive feature list.
I prefer using 65W or less per CPU on this board since it lacks strong high-power phases for heavier wattage chips. A fully uncapped 2700X might drop to 180W under proper cooling, but a 65W CPU running at 80W fits well. Exceeding 100-120W regularly is likely to cause overheating.
